Tavish had known he was about to make a big mistake. It didn’t take a Seer’s talent to tell him that giving in to his urge to kiss Yvaine would complicate an already impossible situation. But being with her, near her, and not fighting with her, made his desire for her surge to the forefront. Yvaine, being cooperative, understanding, sharing his insecurities and finding she had the same, had been more than his need for her could resist. He couldn’t help himself.

He’d kissed her. He’d enjoyed every moment of feeling her in his arms, her lush, pink lips warm and moist beneath his. Her scent. Everything about her seemed made to lure him closer and closer until there was no turning back.

And then she pulled away from him.

And ran near that damn window again.

She might think she’d managed to get rid of him, but after he spoke to her mother, and if need be, to Donal MacNabb himself, she’d find out differently. He’d started this with good intentions, simply to protect her. After tasting her lips, feeling her lush body in his arms, both yesterday and today, he meant to have her. To keep her. To make her his.

But first, he had to protect her. To save her—even from himself, for now—if he hoped she would ever accept him.

How to do it? He’d avoided telling her all he’d seen. But her demands to leave her alone left him in a quandary. He couldn’t tell her he’d seen her with her hair wrapped around her lifeless throat. He wouldn’t frighten her that way. So how to make her take her danger seriously and accept him?

He needed help. Her parents, aye. And his. And Eilidh, if that’s what it took to keep Lathan eyes on her at all times. Bhaltair, certainly. He’d kept the import of his visions to himself for too long. Her father had been attacked. And a stranger was sniffing around her. Tavish would not allow that to continue. He was all for Yvaine being able to choose her friends, but not here. Not now. Not after he’d seen her dead.

He went across the hall and knocked softly on the MacKyrie door. No answer. Donal was probably in the solar with the other lairds. Ellie might be there as well, or with his mother in her herbal.

He went there next.

He heard their laughter even before he reached the door to the herbal. Both women were sitting at their ease, platters of food and drink at their elbows on tables his mother normally used to chop up herbs for various preparations. He and his siblings had always been strictly forbidden from bringing food into this room, much less eating at one of her preparation tables.

She noticed him enter and frown at the table where they sat. “Dinna fash, Tavish. The last things I minced here were parsley and mint. Naught dangerous at all. What can I do for ye?”

He cleared his throat and glanced from her to Ellie MacKyrie, who studied him with unusual intensity, and back again.
